Tapi Carpets co-founder Martin Harris steps down

Tapi Carpets co-founder Martin Harris has left the business after more than a decade.

Harris, who served as the flooring specialist’s vice chair, stepped down earlier this year to pursue other interests.

A company spokesperson told Retail Gazette: “Tapi was founded 10 years ago by a handful of individuals, including the Harris family. Martin Harris agreed to step down as CEO four years ago and stepped down from an executive capacity earlier this year.

“The business is firing on all cylinders with many of the founders still in the business and Tapi is still very much a Harris business with Lord Harris and Charlie Harris both in senior positions within the company.”

Harris’ departure comes after James Sturrock, who joined from Eve Sleep in 2020, left the retailer at the start of the year to join pet food maker Bella & Duke.

Tapi told Retail Gazette Sturrock’s position would not be replaced as former Carpetright finance director Jeevan Kirar had been appointed as managing director last August.

Harris, the son of Carpetright founder Lord Harris and ex-director at the firm, set up rival Tapi in 2015, a year after his father sold his chain.

Lord Harris is an investor and adviser in Tapi, which has now grown to more than 150 stores.
