Mattress specialist Emma lays off 18% of workforce

Online mattress retailer Emma is set to lay off almost a fifth of its worldwide workforce after realigning its expectations for 2024.

The firm will axe 200 employees, 18% of its workforce, amid volatile global economic conditions hitting both the online and home sector.

The online retailer had ambitious plans for 2024, including business expansion and diversifying its product portfolio as it opened its first UK store earlier this year.

To support this growth, Emma integrated new operational and financial systems aimed at maintaining high service standards. However, these transitions turned out to be more complex than anticipated.

As a result, Emma has revised its growth projections for the year and adjusted its organisational structure to align with this, Interior Daily reported.

Last month, the mattress retailer opened the doors to its first UK store in London’s Westfield White City shopping centre.

The 3,035 sq ft shop houses an exclusive range of products only available in store, alongside its core range of mattresses and accessories, such as pillows, duvets, toppers and bed linen.

Emma said at the time that the Westfield location will be the first of many stand-alone stores it will open this year as it looks to expand its retail footprint in the UK.

Its products are currently stocked John Lewis, Furniture Village and other retail partners.
