Euro 2024: Argos to sell four TVs per minute during summer of sport

Argos is expecting to sell more than 180,000 televisions during the 2024 UEFA European football championship, which begins this Friday (14 June).

The retailer has forecast that it will sell four screens every minute throughout the duration of the tournament, the equilavent of filling Wembley Stadium twice over.

Argos said the desire to watch sports on bigger TVs was largely behind this demand, as it found the average size of the TVs sold this year was 55”, up from 49” during the last tournament.

Additionally, the company found that customers were opting for Smart TVs, 4K TVs, and OLED TVs, which it claimed offered superior picture quality and sound.

The suspected sales boost comes as the Euros are set to kick off surging summer spending across the wider industry, with grocery and electronics retailers likely to reap the most rewards, according to recent research by the British Retail Consortium.

Argos business unit director for seasonal, toys and electricals said: “Major sporting events tend to be a time when we see sports fans upgrade their televisions and entertainment systems and similarly to 2021, we anticipate TV search demand to increase further following the kick-off of the 2024 football tournament.

“It’s clear that customers are looking for the best technology on the market and in 2024, the emphasis is on larger TV’s to really create the ultimate viewing experience at home.”
