M&S apologises after website and app outage

M&S is the latest major retailer to experience an online outage as both its website and app went down for several hours on Saturday.

Shoppers on its website were met with a message that read “you can’t shop with us right now”.

The retailer told Sky News that its website was down from “early afternoon” on Saturday but was up and running again by 6pm.

A M&S spokesperson said: “A third party service provider experienced a technical issue which temporarily affected access to our website and app.”

The issues follow technical glitches that impacted online deliveries at both Sainsbury’s and Tesco in recent months.

In March, Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts issued an apology to customers after a software glitch disrupted contactless payments and meant the majority of its online orders were unable to be delivered for a day.

Tesco also had to cancel a “small proportion” of deliveries after a technical issue in mid-March.

The outage comes as M&S is expected to unveil a rise in full-year profits later this week. In its first half, it posted a much better-than-expected 75% rise in profits to £360m.
